save the earth bracelet

Robinson took the 200-year-old bracelet tradition from Bahia, Brazil, and added her own philanthropic twist to their purpose—for each bracelet sold (the retail US$5 per bracelet, or $70 for a “wish pack”), Robinson donates 20 percent or $1 to the Nature Conservancy’s Plant a Billion Trees campaign. Plant a Billion’s mission is “to restore the lungs of the Earth” (a.k.a. the Atlantic Forest of Brazil), and each dollar donated plants one tree.  Last year, Robinson, a native New Yorker and current Denver resident, traveled to the birthplace of her Brazilets. “When you walk up to the most famous Catholic church in Bahia [Church of Nosso Sehnor do Bonfim] the gates are covered in these bracelets. The church is believed to grant miracles. People have tied their bracelets on hoping for good luck.” She also made a pit stop in the very region her bracelets are making an impact. “We’ve helped plant thousands of trees, and it feels good to be doing something that means something and that people believe in,” says Robinson.

Plant a Billion has already planted 5,822,382 trees, and the completion of this reforestation with capororoca, guapuruvu, golden trumpet and ice-cream bean trees will remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year, which is equal to taking 2 million cars off the road. Today is Earth Day’s 40th anniversary, and these bracelets are a great way to give a lot for just a little.
